Manchester City is being sued by Benjamin Mendy over unpaid wages.
The French defender was accused of sexual assault and rape offenses, charges which he continually denied and was acquitted of earlier this year.
City halted Mendy’s £100,000-a-week wages in September 2021 during the trial.
According to Sky Sports, Mendy has filed a ‘multi-million pound claim’ against City for the unpaid wages.
The claim has been lodged with the Employment Tribunal, alleging ‘unauthorized deductions from wages’ during his legal battle.
Mendy, who became the Premier League’s most expensive defender when City paid AS Monaco £52million in 2017, was under contract until June 2023.
He is seeking the salary owed from September 2021 to June 2023.
Mendy’s case is being handled by prominent sports lawyer Nick De Marco KC.
A statement to Sky mentioned, ‘Manchester City FC failed to pay Mr. Mendy any wages at all from September 2021, following Mr. Mendy being charged with various offences all of which he was subsequently acquitted of, until the end of his contract in June 2023.’
Discussions are ongoing, and Mendy’s accountant, David Lumley, estimated the back pay to be ‘in the order of nine to 10 million pounds gross’.
